The Echo Dot (3rd gen) is confusingly both Amazon’s entry-level device in this space and the pick for audiophiles everywhere. A virtual assistant – in this case Alexa – listens for the wake word, and will follow the instructions that follow, be that playing an album, telling you the weather or giving you a news update. Just as its predecessor did it when it was launched back in 2016 it squeezes all the voice-driven smarts of a full-blown Echo into a device that fits in your palm but, unlike that device, its sound quality is good enough that you can listen to it without wincing.
